403(b) AUDIT GUIDELINES NOW ONLINE
The document used by IRS agents when auditing 403(b) programs is now
available for viewing online on BenefitsLink, the national employee benefits
Web site.
These "audit guidelines" provide valuable insights. By reading the
guidelines you can identify areas in which your company's 403(b) plan might
not be in compliance, before the IRS comes to call.
They are surprisingly well written, so they make a nice "primer" on 403(b)
rules as well. (A 403(b) plan is a program of making pre-tax employer or
employee contributions to tax-deferred annuity contracts or custodial
accounts in the names of the employees, always sponsored by a public school
or a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.)
Each defined term is hyperlinked to its definition in the IRS-supplied
glossary. Also included are hyperlinks to the text of the principal Code
sections cited by the IRS.
Find the guidelines on BenefitsLink at

(Remember to type the above address EXACTLY as shown; no capitals. The
character between 403b and guidelines is the "underscore," which usually
appears on keyboards as the capitalized (shifted) hyphen key.)
Please report any missing hyperlinks or other bugs.
