Guest Shelton Posted September 13, 2001 Posted September 13, 2001 I invested my IRA assets in some foreign stocks. They withhled foreign tax on the payments of dividends. Is this proper? I know that dividends on domentic investments are tax deferred. How can I get the withholding back?
Bruce Steiner Posted September 14, 2001 Posted September 14, 2001 With one exception (there may be others, but I'm only aware of one), there isn't anything you can do other than to pay the tax or not invest in foreign stocks. Under the US-Canada income tax treaty, there is no Canadian tax on dividends received by a qualified plan. But even this treaty does not contain a similar exemption for IRAs. Guest Shelton Posted September 14, 2001 Posted September 14, 2001 Bruce, Thanks. This is good to know. Can you tell me where I can get a copy of the treaty? Thanks again Shelton
