My firm is struggling with attracting and retaining part-time workers. We offer health insurance, however, the part-timer must pay the entire premium. I would be interested to hear from other companies if you 1) offer part-time benefits, and 2) how much of the premium does your firs subsidize?

We offer part-timers the opportunity to purchase health insurance at full premium from the date of employment. They become eligible for subsidized benefits after 3 years of service, and at that point the subsidy level is the same as if they were full-time.

One of the problems in contributing to PT for their Medical Insurance is that many of them have coverage elsewhere and can not benefit from the employer's contribution. Perhaps through the use of a Section 125 Cafeteria Plan you could give a specified dollar amount as credits to be used either as a contribution to their Medical, if they elect coverage, or as additional weekly income if they do not want coverage. In that way you can make the coverage more affordable for those who eed it and still not have created an inequity.

Our "regular" part time employees that work a minimum 40 hrs per biweekly pay period receive benefits and prorated accruals for sick leave and vacation. We use quite a few shared positions. Two people working part time.
