Can anyone direct me to a website that can provide current regs/laws and requirements for designing a self-funded dental plan? (I need information such as required language for SPDs or required benefit levels)

Thanks!

Self-funded dental plans have been in existence for many years, and typically have found favor with larger employers, having at least 200 employees. In the past few years, there has been some shift in this strategy, with more employers, ranging in size up to 100,000 employees, moving back from their self-funded plans to insured, and in many cases, non-participating arrangements. This gives HR departments a fixed budget that they can more easily manage. There are many fine dental administrators and insurers, as well as consultants, who would be pleased to assist you in determining the best way for you to fund and deliver dental benefits to your employees.

Craig is 100% correct in his message dated 10-30-98. I would also suggest contacting the American Dental Association for information on Direct Reimbursement Dental plans. The ADA will provide you with a variety of information useful in determining pricing, benefits etc.

One caveat...Take Craig's advice and talk with a good consultant, broker and/or carrier. This way you have all the information to make an informed decision! We illustrate many types of programs to employers so that they can decide which path they would like to pursue. Many companies start out looking at self insured plans and decide the risk vs reward ratio is not enough to warrant going self insured for dental.

Speaking with a consultant is a good idea. One I could reccommend is Phil Collier at 803-831-2165 located near Charlotte NC. This TPA is state of the are ERISA.

We have our plan inclusive of Medical Dental and have been self funded totally for 5 years now.

Also you might want to look into self funding your Workers Comp plan if you are in certain industries where the cost is terrible.
