I am trying to evaluate whether my company is behind on holiday offerings. I would love to hear if anyone offers a floating holiday and if not what holidays do you allow? What city/type of business are you in? Thanks so much!!!

CWilson:

When our holiday schedule came out this year, we had a BIG discussion about this same topic. Due to several Saturday holidays, there was concern that employees were being "cheated" out of some time off.

We are a credit union with close to 400 employees. Our response is that holiday pay is granted to replace income that would be lost due to closure (for a holiday). Some employers use holiday pay as an extra perk rather than granting additinoal paid time off. We have chosen not to do that. We do not promise our employees that they will have "X" number of holidays per year. The holiday schedule (and the pay accompanying it) is set based on where the holidays fall!

Our only exceptions to this are for Christmas. Traditionally, if Christmas falls on a Sunday, we grant the following Monday off as a holiday...however again, we pay holiday pay on that day because if we didn't our employees would be out a day of pay.

County government with 11,000 + employes. Holidays are negotiated with our various unions. Currently the holidays are: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Lincoln bd, Washington bd, Memorial Day, Independence day, Labor day, Columbus day, Veterans day, Thanksgiving , day after Thanksgiving, Christmas day.

Normally if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is counted as the holiday. Starting in 1999, when Christmas and New Years fell on Saturday, the previous Friday was given as the holiday.

Our paid holidays are New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday), Christmas Day, and one floating holiday to be used for the employees birthday (within 60 days following date of birth).

If the holiday falls on a Saturday we take the preceeding Friday, if the holiday falls on Sunday we take the following Monday.

We have six paid holidays--New Years Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, July 4th, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. We also get 3 paid personal days which can be added on to vacation time or taken one day at a time. Since we are a health care facility, we staff 24/7/52. If it is your holiday to work (alternating years), you receive another paid day off within 30 days of the holiday.

We have 8 paid holidays in which our company is closed. We are open on Presidents Day, Good Friday, Veterans Day and Colombus Day. However, we have a pto program and have added 24 hours to the available hours. Employees can choose to take these holidays off using pto hours. We are a small company - under 100 employees located in New England.
