Guest Travis Glass Posted January 18, 2000 Posted January 18, 2000 I am a recent B.S.B.A. graduate from ASU and have decided (after continuous thought and study) that human resources will be the direction for my future. However, my next step to success is I need some information from individuals within the HR field. If you have time, I would greatly appreciate some comments about the following questions. You don’t need to answer them all, just any you have an outlook on. Questions: 1) What is your job title? 2) What experiences help you be prepared or qualified for this job? 3) What do you like most about your job, your company, your industry? 4) What do you like least about your job, your company, your industry? 5) What are the most valuable skills, knowledge, and qualifications to have in HR? 6) Do you know of other locations where I can find valuable HR information? Thanks for your help! If it is all right for me to get back in contact to you, please note at the end of you response. Travis Glass tg8520@yahoo.com
Guest jreddi Posted January 21, 2000 Posted January 21, 2000 Travis: Hope this helps. And I hope you have a fulfilling career in HR. 1. Benefits Manager 2. 8 years on the benefits field, first as a temp ee, then as benefits coordinator, then 2 jobs as a manager (4 years in one, and just started the second one). I have a retail and teaching background which helps me in my present position with a national retailer. 3. My company is progressive and forward thinking. HR is literally the nerve center of this company. My particular job allows me to partner with the store and district managers along with the local HR reps. We are a team-based solution team. 4. Seeing that no matter how freely a company is with its policies and benefits, there are still some people who try to "get over". Disappointing. 5. A thorough knowledge of the various laws that deal both with HR and benefits. An eye to watching pending and upcoming legislation. Access to the internet especially to forums like benefitslink (note to Dave Baker: Have me nominated as Suckup of the Year, hehehe). An ability to teach and listen and calm an employee's fear. Confidence in yourself; fairness to your employees; and communication, communication, communication. 6. www.shrm.com, which is the website of the Society for Human Resources Management. You should be able to join a local chapter. Look into getting certified in CEBS or getting certified by the American Compensation Association. John Feel free to email me at: SF8ball_player@yahoo.com
Guest nac Posted January 21, 2000 Posted January 21, 2000 Sure you want to do this? We old, jaded HR types can tell you stories that'll make you think twice . . . nearly every HR person at some point in his/her career has been elected to tell some employee that they really need to bathe and use a good deodorant - it's a specialty of the job. However, if you're really sure you want to pursue the dark path of HR management, do check out the SHRM site (I'm actually a member with SPHR certification; my cynicism about my chosen life's work comes from a long hard week in the trenches!) - I think the website is actually www.shrm.org, not .com. I would encourage you to join if you're serious about pursuing HR as a career. CEBS is also a good course to pursue if you're interested in benefits management. HIAA also provides a certification course specifically aimed at health insurance. Good luck . . .
Sheila K Posted January 21, 2000 Posted January 21, 2000 Questions: 1) What is your job title? Research & Development Specialist/HRD 2) What experiences help you be prepared or qualified for this job? Working knowledge of LOTS of software! Ability to deal with people in a level-headed, fair-handed manner. 3) What do you like most about your job, your company, your industry? Love my work atmosphere, very supportive supervisor. Work for a credit union, which I totally believe in (people helping people). 4) What do you like least about your job, your company, your industry? Can't always make everyone happy. Never enough time to get it all done. 5) What are the most valuable skills, knowledge, and qualifications to have in HR? Software skills, ability to talk to people, time to keep up with all the stuff to read! 6) Do you know of other locations where I can find valuable HR information? 1. http://www.infoworld.com/cgi-bin/displayCa...age.htm#perform 2. http://www.hrlawindex.com/ 3. http://www.nationalpartnership.org/workand...ons_answers.htm ------------------ Good Luck!!!
