System Upgrades

We are new Quantech users, in fact we are still in the installation process. We have a question regarding system upgrades. When you receive a system upgrade, what is your testing process? Do you load the upgrade directly into your production environment? Or do you have a testing region? If you use a testing region, do you have any suggestions how to get around this, as we do not have a separate server for a testing region. Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Suzie Thalls

We put system upgrades into a test environment. But we have a LAN with an Oracle server. We typically test by doing all of the routine activities in the test environment. We do discover problems. You may wish to consider waiting to install upgrade for a period of time. That way Quantech can install fixes discovered on initial rollout. They generally good at fixing most things. But like any other complicated system, some issues are never resolved. We just work around them. Good Luck.

Dan offers good advice. In regards to updates, (such as the upcoming 5.0), it never hurts to hold off loading for awhile. Let other people discover the problems that may exist.

For particular fixes, you might as well load fairly soon. If something was broken and a calculation wasn't correct, you probably aren't going to lose ground if the fix broke something else.

The biggest danger of some 'fixes'?

Sometimes we will process a plan at our office for another Quantech user. Sometimes one so called minor fix will result in an incompatibility between two systems, and therefore data can't be transferred unless both systems have the exact same fixes.

Absolute best recommendation - Join the user group in your area. especially being new to the system. you will get lots of help and tips and tricks.

Suzie:

We've been Pentabs (Quantech for DOS) since 1990 and Quantech users for about a year and a half. Our policy is to test all major upgrades on a test platform before going live with them. We do have the luxury of having a test database server for this purpose.

Without two data servers, I strongly suggest to do the upgrade and testing over a weekend, but only after you are certain you have a good backup of your Oracle server AND your Quantech program directories in case something goes awry.

I agree with Tom and Dan about waiting until other users discover all the bugs, but folks, if we tell everybody, there will be nobody left to discover them. :-)

don't worry, there will always be users who load updates right away!

and remember, one of the nice things about this forum- it is a great place to post discovered problems.

so please (to all), if you trip across something post it so others know.
