Guest helenw Posted March 9, 2000 Posted March 9, 2000 Could someone please explain to me what a Quantech Terminal Server is and what it does?
Guest JohnB10 Posted March 9, 2000 Posted March 9, 2000 Sure. Terminal Server is software that runs on a Microsoft NT server class computer. When a user logs into a Terminal Server to run an application (like Quantech), all the behind the scenes work that would typically be done by Quantech on your PC now gets done on the Terminal Server. All that happens at your PC is that the screen gets updated. Thus, you don't need to have top-of-the line PCs in your office; just a very good Terminal Server 'box'. One other big use of Terminal Server is that users can connect to it over the phone lines. This means that if you have staff that want to work from home, they can dial in to the Terminal Server and run Quantech. Since all that gets passed over the phone lines is mouse clicks and screen updates, this type of remote set-up has pretty good performance. Lastly, and most importantly, you'll want to keep cost/benefit in mind. Although hardware is relatively cheap, NT Server class boxes can be expensive on the high end. I don't know offhand what the software itself costs. Additionally, at QT 5.0 there is a Corbel support fee for Terminal Server (Corbel does not support Term Server prior to 5.0). I highly recommend paying the support fee...Corbel's 'tekkies' are worth it. The kicker: If you are interested in using Terminal Server to connect multiple offices, there is a steep (in my humble opinion) Corbel license fee that is graded on the level of Quantech you are running (Daily vs. traditional). Bottom line: determine your business need, cost it out, and if you still want to go ahead with it, call Corbel for assistance. Hope this helps!
