PhilB Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Is anyone aware of any reliable studies or information that examines the overall cost impact (if any) of adding coverage for domestic partners? Any info appreciated.
david rigby Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 I have not seen any studies, but I would be skeptical of any such results. IMHO, very likely that studies will underestimate the $ impact. Anti-selection component will be significant. I'm a retirement actuary. Nothing about my comments is intended or should be construed as investment, tax, legal or accounting advice. Occasionally, but not all the time, it might be reasonable to interpret my comments as actuarial or consulting advice.
mroberts Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 I don't think the overall impact would be significant. Most carriers do not increase rates by adding this provision, so something tells me they have monitored the costs associated with this. Plus you're better off from an attraction and retention standpoint.
david rigby Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 ...something tells me they have monitored the costs associated with this. Just what is "something"? Facts please. Many prior examples of specific benefits / coverage added to plans, with the resulting cost much higher than the "estimate". The utilization and anti-selection components will be higher than anybody's estimates. The only question is "by how much?" I'm a retirement actuary.
