Guest Jennif102 Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Hi, This may be a basic question but I can't seem to find the answer on here. I want to take the 401(k) I have with an old employer and roll it into my Roth IRA. My Roth IRA plan administrator said I need to make sure the 401(k) is roth first and then roll it over. I have no idea how to do this. I don't think my former employer offers Roths, just 401(k)s. What are the exact steps I need to take to make this conversion happen properly? Thx!
JanetM Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 First you have to roll to traditional IRA then convert to Roth IRA. JanetM CPA, MBA
Appleby Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 ...unless it's done on or after 01/01/08 , then you may do a direct Roth Conversion from your 401(k) plan to your Roth IRA. Talk to your Roth IRA custodian about their operational and documentation requirements Life and Death Planning for Retirement Benefits by Natalie B.
