austin3515 Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Doing an amended 2010 5500 today. Should I check the extension box? Getting a validation error from FT Williams because there is an extension created, but the box isn't check. It seems silly to check the extension box for an amended return. Thoughts? chc93 Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 If the original filed 5500 didn't have an extension, I don't think we've marked the extension box for an amendment to that 5500. And I think we did this in FTWilliam... and I don't recall any problems.
ESOP Guy Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 My thinking on amended returns is you only change what is being amended. So I would answer the question the same as you did the first time. To change your answer implies you are amending your answer. So in your case it sounds like the return was amended. If you don't check the amended box this time and I was an IRs employee (this is coming from a former IRS employee for what it is worth) I would interpret that to mean you really didn't have an extension the first time. You after all amended your answer.
austin3515 Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 If you were the IRS, wouldn't you clarify that point in the instructions? OK, I'm moving forward with the box checked for extension!! Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
BG5150 Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 If you were the IRS, wouldn't you clarify that point in the instructions? The IRS has lots of clarifications to make. QKA, QPA, CPC, ERPATwo wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.

Filing accepted, no errors. Yes... accepted by EFAST2. But isn't it the IRS that eventually "looks" for an extension if the box is checked? After all, the extension is filed only with the IRS...
austin3515 Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 Which is why I was finally convinced to check the extension box. Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
