CEB Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Hello, For retirees living abroad, may their international or government provided health insurance premiums and insurance out of pocket expenses be reimbursed by an USA HRA (former employer lumpsum awarded at retirement for medical expenses)? I would think no to other government premium insurance cost, but yes to private international medical polices and OOP. ? Carrie
spiritrider Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 An HRA can reimburse qualified medical expenses as defined in Publication 502. There is no restriction defined for foreign insurance premiums or medical expenses, except for specific minor restriction on prescription medications. You can include the cost of a prescribed drug you purchase and consume in another country if the drug is legal in both the other country and the United States. Under what basis do you think foreign government insurance premiums should be specifically disallowed, when Medicare premiums are specifically allowed. CEB 1
