Guest mspencer Posted June 7, 2000 Posted June 7, 2000 Any idea where we can get a list of NAIC codes? We contacted one of the very large insurance companies where one of our client's funds were invested, and they acted like it was some classified information or something.
bzorc Posted June 7, 2000 Posted June 7, 2000 There is nothing on the web that gives this information. What we have tried is contacting the insurance companies' compliance department, who should understand why the NAIC code is needed. That has worked so far.
Guest nherkowitz Posted June 7, 2000 Posted June 7, 2000 A list of the NAIC codes is available in the 5500 Preparers Manual for 1999 Plan Years. It is available through Panel Publishers, www.panelpublishers.com
KIP KRAUS Posted June 7, 2000 Posted June 7, 2000 I contacted my insurers for their NIAC codes. They had no qualms about providing it to me. I would also think that they will be required to providing this information when they provide the Schedule A information as required by ERISA.
Greg Judd Posted June 7, 2000 Posted June 7, 2000 Hi all, I'd be happy to send any of you a file of NAIC code info (BTW, the info IS available in the form 5500 instructions at the IRS site--it makes up the last couple pages of the instructions). We use it as part of our data products. No charge. Let me know the file format you prefer, or whether an HTML formatted reference page would do the trick.
Greg Judd Posted June 8, 2000 Posted June 8, 2000 Bzorc, I have a hunch that David Shipp's extraordinary clear-sightedness on this topic helps answer your question & explain what I was on about. My post refers to the North American Industrial Classification codes; those consume pages 17-19 of the form 5500 instructions available here: Form 5500 Instructions -Acrobat format - As for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' codes needed for Schedule A....David, can you pull another rabbit out of your hat? If the codes are available on the NAIC's own site, they're well-hidden.... [This message has been edited by Greg Judd (edited 06-08-2000).]
david shipp Posted June 8, 2000 Posted June 8, 2000 Interestingly, there are two separate NAIC codes in the 5500 package: North American Industry Classification code for the plan sponsor used in line 2d of the 5500 and which can be found in the form instructions. National Association of Insurance Commissioners code for an insurance company used in line 1c of Sched A. This code is obtained from the insurance company and must be provided, the same as other Sched. A info. Many insurance companies are not yet aware of the addition of this item to the Sched. A.
bzorc Posted June 8, 2000 Posted June 8, 2000 Greg, where on the IRS website are the codes? I looked at the 5500 instructions for 1999, but did not see them. Thanks.
bzorc Posted June 8, 2000 Posted June 8, 2000 Well, duh on my part! It helps to read the question, as I have found the other codes which are recited on pages 17-19 of the 5500 instructions. Back to my calling the insurance companies!!! Thanks for your help, Greg.
Guest mspencer Posted June 9, 2000 Posted June 9, 2000 Thanks for all your help, guys. Now that I actually looked in the 5500 Preparer's Manual (that we actually had in our office library), I'm a happy camper. However, for those of you out there who aren't interested in shelling out the money for the Manual, I found that I could get a list of insurance companies licensed to do business in my state, including their NAIC codes, from the State Insurance Commissioner's Office (at least that's how it works in the State of Georgia), for a small fee. Surely when they prepare the Schedules A for this year, the insurance companies will revamp the format to include all the necessary information.
Guest Paul Posted June 28, 2000 Posted June 28, 2000 I applaud your efforts to get the NAIC code. If it is not on the information from the carrier I follow the instructions and simply insert "0000" Hopefully next year the carriers will get on the ball and include the info. The harder item is the carrier's EIN.
