Plan Sponsor just amended a prior year 5500. The efast2 search now does not show any 5500 for that year - original or amended. Just curious if this is standard, or if something might have gone wrong with filing?

I think the "standard" is to show all filings.  Both the original and the amended.

I'm a retirement actuary. Nothing about my comments is intended or should be construed as investment, tax, legal or accounting advice. Occasionally, but not all the time, it might be reasonable to interpret my comments as actuarial or consulting advice.

I can see the amended filings when I do them.   I don't think I see the original on EFAST2.   Did you get one of those numbers (I forget the name) that proves you filed?   Every filing gets assigned a long string of numbers that can reference the filing and is one of the best proofs the filing was received.

It has been a number of years since I have done it but the times I have called the DOL's EFAST2 helpline they have been very helpful in determining if all went well or not.   When things went wrong they were very helpful in determining what happened.

I don't know if there is a delay when amending between seeing them as it has been a while since I  have filed an amended return but I think your concern is well founded.

Like ESOP Guy - I've seen the amended return and the original goes away.  I have looked relatively soon after filing the amended return (like the next day).  Since the original is no longer there, it seems like the amended should be there.  I also agree about the DOL EFAST help line, always received good service when contacting them....

Did the sponsor sign and file electronically or did you sign and file on their behalf with a copy of the signed 5500 attached?

When you amend, the original filing is replaced with the amended filing.  If you have an attachment with your filing, there will usually be a delay as the DOL will verify that there is no sensitive information posted for public viewing.  You might have a short time when no filing is visible while the original is removed and the amended has not been checked.

To respond to the helpful postings above:

  • Plan Sponsor filed electronically himself using one of the 5500 vendors (not efast2)
  • Plan is a fully insured welfare benefit plan so there is definitely no confidential information, there is no attachment, and no audit.
  • Efast2 usually reflects filings immediately as I'm quick to check
  • I've seen multiple of the situations listed in the past, original and amended are shown or just the amended shown, but I've never seen neither one shown, which is why I posted this inquiry

Did the sponsor get an ACKID?

If not, there might have been some sort of filing error.

Was the 'Amended Return' box checked on the form?

I find it odd that the original one went away.

Did you try searching with the tax id or employer name instead of plan name?

Did they get an ACKID the first time?  Try searching with that.

Have all this above info ready for when you call the DOL.

QKA, QPA, CPC, ERPA

Figured this out. I know they why, just not the reason.

For plan years filed 2018 or earlier, they are using current plan year form (2020) but for whatever reason, because of this they simply won't show up on efast2.

Yes there is an ACKID.

This is nice to know... thanks.  I will be doing a 2018 Form 5500 filing in the near future, and will be using the 2020 (or even the 2021 form if really late).
