Gary Posted November 20, 2000 Posted November 20, 2000 A Plan has a SS offset formula. Normal Ret is age 65. The offset is up to 45% of PIA. If a person has a SSRA of 66 and retires at age 65 should the Plan use the PIA at age 66 and then reduce it by 1/15 for commencement at age 65 when determining the offset portion? It doesn't seem right to use the PIA unreduced. It seems it s/ use the SS Ben at the ben commencement date of 65. Any thoughts? Plan says that it is just the unreduced PIA, but I tend to disagree. Gary.
david rigby Posted November 20, 2000 Posted November 20, 2000 We'll assume that this is not already defined in the plan. Seems reasonable to use the PIA at 65 since that is the definition of NRD. Might need to be careful with any ER benefit though. Any precedent to help? I'm a retirement actuary. Occasionally, but not all the time, it might be reasonable to interpret my comments as actuarial or consulting advice.
