Accountable Pharmacy Organizations: Could Pharmacists Be Paid Based on Outcomes?
"[One author] argues that value-based reimbursement for pharmacists through accountable pharmacy organizations (APOs) may be the answer. ... [Another] notes that while APOs are innovative, a key challenge is making sure pharmacists are reimbursed for their primary job: dispensing medicines.... Both approaches move pharmacists from pill dispensing machines to true health care providers. Which Types of Insurance Are Marketplace Enrollees Choosing?

Having a recognized brand name or broader provider network, for example, can still be important considerations, and, if they are stronger motivators for many consumers' plan choices, they could have important implications for competition in these markets and for federal health spending on marketplace subsidies.... Blue Cross Blue Shield-affiliated insurers accounted for about 47 percent of marketplace enrollment in 2018, down slightly from 2017.... Enrollment in national and regional insurer plans fell from 33 percent in 2016 to 14 percent in 2018."
