Guest thombaker Posted August 8, 2001 Posted August 8, 2001 My COBRA coverage is coming to an end. I have ascertained by all I have read that I am eligible for HIPAA, and I need it, but I can't find information on how to go about getting a policy. Any suggestions? Thanks. Thom
Guest jreddi Posted August 8, 2001 Posted August 8, 2001 HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is NOT an insurance policy. Rather it is a law which allows you to be entitled to any new coverage without a limitation on pre-existing conditions, provided that you have had that prior coverage for eighteen months without a break in coverage of more than 63 days. At the termination of your previous employer's health plan (or COBRA coverage), your insurance carrier (or TPA) should be sending you a Certificate of Creditable Coverage, which you should present to your next employer or next insurance carrier, if you choose an individual policy. For more information on HIPAA, you should check previous message threads.
Guest rcenturion Posted August 10, 2001 Posted August 10, 2001 You should also check with your state's Department of Insurance to find out which insurance companies in the state offer the "HIPAA" policies, also known as guaranteed-issue policies.
