I didn't attend the session where this was addressed, but an interesting issue was raised at the conference about how many unknown controlled groups might exist. the example given involved a child under age 21. If the parents have separated and both own businesses then a controlled group exists. In fact, technically, it doesn't matter even if there was no marriage. yeh right. how are you going to ask for that on your data request...

do you have any kids that no one is suppossed to know about whose other parent might also own a business?

I think my biggest highlight is to actually meet with some people who respond to this website- even if it is only for a few minutes. It is always great to connect a face with a name . I missed our fearless leader's talk, as I was off moderating another session.

I got a little carried away and actually had fun giving my talk. I don't know if that's permissable or not. even interrupted the talk with a pension song - I'll get the words posted under the humor forum.

I ran into another unknown controlled group issue many years ago. A privately owned company (multiple generations of one family) was bought out by management. In order to finance it, they went to a large fund that specialized in these buyouts. The fund ended up getting a large enough equity stake that the company became part of a controlled group that included all of the firms that the fund invested in.

How about that? Being a part of a controlled group of companies and you don't even know who they are. The fund would not divulge that information, either.

Tom: I was both at the session on Controlled Groups you were discussing and at your session. I have to say one of the highlights of the conference was your session. Loved the shirt. You did a wonderful job. I wanted to come up front to introduce myself afterwards because I was so familiar with your name from these boards, but there were a lot of people in front of me and I decided to get downstairs before the ice cream ran out. By the way, my co-worker was one of the 4 single females left standing when you did your survey but she was to shy to invite you to dinner.

Thanks for taking the time to prepare for and present a session at the conference. This was my third conference and I thought the best.

Kate:

Thank you for your kind comments.

as I said, I had an absoulte riot giving the presentation. The shirt was a bit toned down from some other 'wardrobe' I have worn, but the boss wasn't sure if ASPA was ready for anything more - at least on my first attempt.

Hopefully next year I can do another talk. I don't have the ability to simply stand behind a podium and talk - either nerves or a bit of hyperactivity or whatever -you must have noticed I kept moving, - I also set a goal of not just proividing some imformation, but doing it in a way that might help people remember things better - or hopefully at least enjoyable. sounds like I at least accomplished that.

the so-called 'survey' was unplanned, the idea only came to me the day before. (Well heck, when you are single...)

again thanks!
