Can anyone tell me what the 20-30 largest 401k providers are in the US or tell me a web site which lists the major 401k providers in the US? I'm currently looking for jobs in the 401k sales industry but would like to get an idea of who is out there for companies before I begin my search. I know Fidelity is a large one....thanks so much.

Plan Sponsor Magazine does an annual report on providers. All the big ones reply when invited. I'd start there. Try www.Plansponsor.com (there is a free registration required).

Pensions & Investments magazine has an annual edition that comes out each September with rankings of defined contribution providers that's worth finding.

If you can't locate the hard copy, page 17 of http://www.pionline.com/pension/ has a chart that vaguely tells you the largest defined contribution providers. The hard copy issue is much better though.

You did not state what type of job you hope to get in the "401k sales industry" (whatever that is), but in any case I must point out that large does not mean good. The biggest or largest might not pay you the best etc etc.

You might want to consider redefining and reanalyzing whatever it is that you are thinking of.

Gburns beat me to the punch.

I would redefine exactly what you are searching for - bigger definitely does not mean better. In fact, it very typically means more mediocre.

Smaller organizations may give you more opportunities to be more creative, have more say in the definition of job, more opportunities for advancement, etc. etc.

The links in Demosthenes' post are to the prior year's CFO survey. The first half alphabetically of the survey (called the 401(k) Buyer's Guide) is already on www.cfo.com and the second half probably will be posted May 1 or so.

The Pensions & Investments issue I mentioned before is 10/14/2002.
