voluntary employee contributions aren't 401(k) deferrals are they?

I'm confused as to the difference between voluntary employee contributions as opposed to employee contributions. There seems to be a difference.

Could you be thinking of elective deferral contributions (pre-tax) v. employee contributions (after-tax)?

Lori,

Thank you. Could be: In one section of our defined contribution plan it says that employee contributions may be made. In a separate section, however, it states that the plan won't accept ee contributions designated as deductible ee contributions within the meaning of Code Section 72(o)(5)(A). Now I'm really confused.

I'm thinking that the voluntary employee contributions could be contributions made by an employer on behalf of any participant, perhaps to meet testing requirements. Could that be?

I really don't know. I hope someone can provide some insight.

I.R.C. Sec. 72(o)(5)(A) is about a certain type of contribution that could have been made between 1982 and 1986.

If you need more information about this issue, I'll be happy to dig around and see if I can find something for you.

Lori, That is very generous of you to offer to find additional information, but from your answer it appears that because it does not apply to employee contributions made currently, it would not be an issue. I thank you for putting my mind at ease.
