Guest Bob Monte Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Is it possible to convert existing 401k contributions that were made after-tax into a Roth 401K?
Beltane Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Is it possible to convert existing 401k contributions that were made after-tax into a Roth 401K? I would say No. After tax contributions are not 401k contributions, they are 401m contributions. Since elective deferral [401k] contributions may not be converted to Roth 401k accounts, voluntary contributions [401m] I assume are also prohibited.
Guest mjb Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 No because AT contributions are not regarded as elective contributions under 401k whereas Roth 401k contributions are deemed elective contributions made on an AT basis. Elective contributions must be designated as Roth contributions at the time they are contributed to the plan and are irrevocable.
Guest Bob Monte Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Thanx to both of you for the help. It just seems that since there was never any tax benefit for the contribution and Roths were not available then, there would be a way to get these funds somehow into a Roth and simplify the inevitable tax mess
