GMK Posted April 12, 2016 Author Posted April 12, 2016 ^Now we need a "more than like this" button. I missed the Saturday follow up completely ... nicely done, BG.
Tom Poje Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 so now I suppose you will tell me that the 415 limit is called that because taxes have to be filed by 4/15 the ultimate limit!............................ more useless facts from Tom:Emancipation Day: April 15, 2016Emancipation Day is an official public holiday in the District of Columbia. It usually falls on April 16, but when April 16 is a Saturday – which it is in 2016 – then Emancipation Day moves to the previous day (Friday). Here is an excerpt from IRS Revenue Ruling 2015-13:“The term ‘legal holiday’ includes a legal holiday observed in the District of Columbia…. Emancipation Day, April 16, is a legal holiday in the District of Columbia [D.C. Code § 28-2701 (2010)]. When April 16 is a Saturday, the preceding day is the observed holiday.”That means Emancipation Day will be observed on Friday, April 15, 2016.Since Emancipation Day is a legal holiday, it gets precedence over the April 15 tax deadline. Here is another excerpt from IRS Revenue Ruling 2015-13:“Section 7503 of the Code provides that, when April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, a return is considered timely filed if it is filed on the next succeeding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.”That means the Federal tax deadline is pushed to the following Monday. Therefore, most individuals will have until Monday, April 18, 2016 to file their income tax return. Note that this also affects the deadline for the first installment payment of estimated income tax (see below).
GMK Posted April 12, 2016 Author Posted April 12, 2016 With all the important holidays in the middle of April (Emancipation Day, Patriot Day, often Passover and Easter, my birthday, Kareem's birthday, my lifelong friend Tim's birthday, Jayne Mansfield's birthday, the Queen's birthday, etc.), they should make it simple by saying, "File your taxes on or before April 15 (regardless of when the important days are), or file for a filing extension." Done. My friends who are tax preparers would love it. This year the weekend is perfectly positioned for their celebration of the end of tax season, but the stupid extension due to holidays wrecks that idea. The filings could have been done by April 14, but some of their clients are lazy and clueless. K2retire 1

Note that this also affects the deadline for the first installment payment of estimated income tax (see below) Does not affect the April 15 due date for DB quarterly contributions, if applicable, although there has been a heated debate about this, on one of the Message Boards. I'm a retirement actuary. Nothing about my comments is intended or should be construed as investment, tax, legal or accounting advice. Occasionally, but not all the time, it might be reasonable to interpret my comments as actuarial or consulting advice.
My 2 cents Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Therefore, most individuals will have until Monday, April 18, 2016 to file their income tax return. Note that this also affects the deadline for the first installment payment of estimated income tax (see below) Does not affect the April 15 due date for DB quarterly contributions, if applicable, although there has been a heated debate about this, on one of the Message Boards. The IRS has made clear that the DB bcontribution deadlines (and that includes the 8 1/2 month deadline) are not pushed back to the first business day after the regularly scheduled contribution deadline. Always check with your actuary first!
Belgarath Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Any IRS reference? I do recall seeing this somewhere re minimum funding deadline, but I'm not sure where I might have seen it for the quarterly contributions.
david rigby Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Prior discussion here:http://benefitslink.com/boards/index.php/topic/52072-2011-contribution-deadline-91512-or-91712/ ..but let's not beat that dead horse again. Belgarath Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Gracias. And I agree, no reason to bother the horse any more...

My great apologies for failing to highlight a very important holiday in the middle of April, namely, the BenefitsLink anniversary. Where would we be without that one?!
