Ok, here is a new one I have never seen from the IRS

For year end: 12/31/2020

Letter dated 2/13/2023

Re: 5500/8955 filing.

Letter states that the 5500 must be filed by 10/15/2021 (you are not reading wrong)

The 5500-EZ was filed on 10/7/2021 with an ACK

What am I missing here?

Thanks

Someone found it behind their desk and saw that it was filed timely so they approved it and sent it out.

As sad as it is, this is probably dead on.  The notice generator automatically generates and mails out a notice when certain data or criteria are met in the system.  Unless its a glitch, someone found and entered an old 5558 into the system and a notice was mailed out.

Sad but true. I just never saw this level of incompetence/tardiness. Best to invent time travel.

Thank you both.

Another reason why IRS is trying to require e-filing of as many forms as possible.

Practitioners and industry organizations are really the ones who have pushed e-filing of the 5558 (for good reason).  IRS has had a "we will get to it when we have time and funding" approach...

I would welcome the day...

We just had a client receive a CP216H denying their extension for the 2020 5500 and the letter from the IRS is dated 2/27/2023. The letter says the 5558 was late.  The form 5500 was filed in August of 2021.  Is there anything that can even be done at this point?

Don't fret yet, wait to see if any penalty notice is generated, then submit proof of timely 5558 filing and 5500 acknowledgement repeatedly until IRS catches on and drops the issue.  I've spent up to 2 years filing monthly replies till their chandelier was fully lit.....
