Guest Rooster Posted March 1, 2001 Posted March 1, 2001 A is married with children. A terminates employment and elects COBRA coverage. A few months later A takes a new job and the new employer offers health coverage. Is there anyway for A to maintain COBRA coverage for one dependent child while A and the remaining family members receive coverage under the new employer's health plan? Any authority out there on this issue?
Guest lmrice Posted March 2, 2001 Posted March 2, 2001 Yes, former employee A may maintain COBRA coverage for just one dependent. Upon A's employment termination, each dependent is considered a "qualified beneficiary" and may make individual elections. Employee A may also put his remaining family members on the new insurance. Note: He may not be able to add the dependent in question to his new plan, without jeopardizing his COBRA eligibility - since coverage under another group insurance plan may terminate COBRA coverage (after other plan's pre-existing condition clause expires).
