In an effort to plan for the projected long-term care needs of its residents, the Washington Legislature passed the Long-Term Services and Supports Trust Act to provide long-term care benefits for Washington state residents. The first of its kind in the United States, the Act creates the Washington Cares Fund that will be funded by payroll deductions of 0.58 percent of an employee’s wages. While the new law does not take effect until next year and residents can opt out by November 1, 2021, employers should start taking steps to be prepared and share information with their Washington-based employees.
