Guidance on State and Local Paid Sick Leave and Paid Family Leave Laws, Part III: A Federal Twist

Seyfarth Shaw LLP

June 9, 2021
On-Demand
Webinar

In the past few months, members of Congress have introduced several bills to mandate paid sick leave (“PSL”) and paid family leave (“PFL”) nationwide. President Biden has signaled his support for some of these proposals. As the country’s paid leave patchwork continues to evolve and impose perplexing and burdensome compliance obligations on even the most well-intentioned employers, businesses of all sizes are asking — when will we see a federal PSL or PFL mandate on private employers and will that mandate resolve the state and local paid leave patchwork?

In this unique combination webinar, we will examine the current federal leave law landscape and provide insight into the latest federal PSL and PFL legislation, including high level substantive details, potential impact on the patchwork of state and local leave laws, and prospects going forward.

Topics that will be covered during the webinar include:

  • Updates on the status of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, including tax credits for covered employers that voluntarily provide emergency paid sick time and expanded family medical leave benefits;
  • An overview of the Family and Medical Leave Act and federal contractor paid sick leave mandate under Executive Order 13706;
  • A discussion of the Healthy Families Act legislation and the potential federal paid sick leave obligations it would impose on private employers;
  • Highlights of various federal paid family leave proposals, including: (A) PFL under the Biden Administration’s American Families Plan; (B) the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act (better known as the FAMILY Act); and (C) the recently introduced Building an Economy for Families Act.
