Guidance on State and Local Paid Sick Leave Laws: Major Changes in California, Minnesota, Illinois, and Chicago Lead Us Into 2024

Seyfarth Shaw LLP

Dec. 13, 2023
On-Demand
Webinar

2023 has seen its fair share of notable changes in the Paid Sick Leave law landscape, and the final weeks of the year have been no different. Major new programs are set to come online at the state level in Illinois and Minnesota on January 1, 2024, and significant amendments have recently been enacted in California (state), Chicago (IL), and Cook County (IL), among other locations. Each development brings its own unique set of nuances and challenges, including multiple of these mandates focusing on paid time off (i.e., PTO) rather than or in addition to paid sick leave, and each may prove a harbinger of future changes to come.

Join our experienced attorneys for this pivotal year-end program, where they will discuss:

  1. What makes the Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County programs so unique,
  2. Why the Minnesota ESST Law is so troublesome for employers, and how it impacts the state’s existing local paid sick leave mandates,
  3. The impact of California's Paid Sick Leave expansion both inside and outside the state,
  4. The implementation of these programs in 2024, including compliance challenges, and
  5. A forecast of potential paid sick leave and paid time off law developments in 2024.
