Cross-tested plans are one of the more attractive plan designs. Changes made by SECURE Act 2.0 have made them even more attractive. Combining the cross-tested plan with a 401(k) plan (particularly a Safe Harbor 401(k) Plan) increases plan contributions and provides flexibility. To accommodate different fact patterns, it is critical that practitioners not only understand how to design the plans, but also how to test such plans, and how to troubleshoot the plans when the design no longer works.
