AJC Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Our office orders free tax forms from the IRS every year. For 2022, half of the forms 1096 we received from the IRS in our forms order have 2021 in the upper right corner instead of 2022. Is it okay to use the 2021 forms 1096 for the transmittal of the forms 1099-R?
imchipbrown Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. You should be able to scrounge around for the correct Form. Local CPAs, stationary stores, etc. A plea in your local Nextdoor neighborhood?
Dare Johnson Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 This could cause a reject since the years do not match and result in late filing penalties. I would use an online program to file 1099s with the IRS - it is not that expensive and you have a confirmation of filing. Most will allow the data to be imported.
Kristina Kan Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 The 1096 is used by the government to verify the taxes withheld for the YEAR as well as the amounts paid. If you use a 2021 1096, the IRS will look for the amounts in 2021. How many letters are you willing to write to explain the discrepancy?? Bill Presson and Bri 2
