A cafeteria plan allows employers to offer employees a selection of benefits on a pre-tax basis, and are also known as flexible benefit plans or 125 plans. Employees can choose between receiving taxable cash or other benefits on a pre-tax basis, similar to selecting items in a cafeteria line. This allows employees to access benefits like health, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, and adoption assistance on a pre-tax basis.
