Minutiae or not? Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 I'm reviewing a GAAP valuation report whose signature block for years states that the actuary is an EA. There's nothing wrong with that- after all, some of my best friends are an EA. On checking the credentials I found that the person is also an ASA (with other related and very impressive credentials) .What I am struggling with is why the signor doesn't include the ASA designation in the signature block. (The person is still active and in good standing). Any ideas or suggestions as to be on the lookout for hidden landmines?
ratherbereading Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Maybe it's not important to them? Maybe they forgot to add the other credentials? Designations mean you are good at studying for a test. I've known lots of "professionals" with designations who didn't know anymore about retirement plans than the dogcatcher, and people with no designations who were brilliant! I wouldn't make too much out of it. 4 out of 3 people struggle with math
Minutiae or not? Posted April 20, 2020 Author Posted April 20, 2020 I agree with everything you said except for the last statement. I found that they actively chose not to add the credentials- that started me on this quest. We've had members in this community lose their credential status because of something as non-descriptas not paying their annual dues (actuary pocketed dues paid by his employer) to headline grabbers that would make one blanche. But here, this involves submission of documents to the SEC. Your recommendation wouldn't hold water here. On the other hand, I understand (and would like to the same) your user id. ratherbereading 1
david rigby Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 IMHO, you should direct your question to the actuary. I'm a retirement actuary. Nothing about my comments is intended or should be construed as investment, tax, legal or accounting advice. Occasionally, but not all the time, it might be reasonable to interpret my comments as actuarial or consulting advice.
Minutiae or not? Posted April 21, 2020 Author Posted April 21, 2020 Dave, you're right. I forgot to state that he won't take my call.
Effen Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 That is actually troubling than whether they use their ASA designation or not. That said, I agree with RatherbeReading, your OP is likely a non-issue. You can look on the SOA website and see if credentials are current. www.soa.org. However, if the person is not listed on the SOA site, it doesn't necessarily mean he isn't a valid EA, it could just mean he is no longer a member of any professional organization. Some people don't like paying dues. Effen, this may be true if you are a SOA member, but for an ACOPA/ASEA (non-SOA) member it can be very difficult to get that directory updated at all other than name, at least in recent years. I have first hand experience with that.
