Social Security and Welfare Benefits Going Paperless
"In May, the government will no longer pay someone eligible for benefits with a mailed check. Instead, the money will be electronically deposited directly into a bank account or made accessible by a debit card. And by March 2013, the 10 mil.lion people who receive checks, out of 70 mil.lion people in all, must switch over to direct deposit or use a card."

EEOC Says Ledbetter Act Does Not Apply to Pension Payments (PDF)
"Adopting the 'paycheck rule,' the Ledbetter Act provides that the period for filing a charge under Title VII begins anew each time an employee receives a wage payment based in part on the challenged compensation decision, regardless of when it was made. . . . On November 30, 2010, the EEOC ruled in a case of first impression that the Ledbetter Act's paycheck rule does not apply to pension payments."

401(k) Advice for a Hefty Fee
"For investors who have a large account, say $500,000 or more, and want help, signing up for a managed account may be a cost-effective option. Financial Engines says the average annual expense for its managed accounts -- including mutual fund and management fees -- is 0.65%. That is a reasonable amount to pay in total expenses in a 401(k) plan."

Hawaii Pension Taxation Plan Not Popular Among Seniors
"A state tax on pension income -- with an exemption for low- to middle-income retirees -- could generate $114 mil.lion a year, among the largest single sources of potential revenue the governor has identified to close a projected two-year deficit in excess of $700 mil.lion."

It's Time for Actuaries to Stand Up and Be Counted
"If officials do not take decisive action this year -- even as tax revenues are rising to pre-recession levels -- no rate of economic growth, increased taxes and expense cuts will save many states, counties, cities and towns from eternal debt."

SEC's Final Rules on Shareholder Say on Golden Parachute Pay
"Most important, the Final Rules clarify that the advisory vote 'Golden Parachute' payments will not be effective until proxy statements are initially filed on or after April 25, 2011 (unlike the SSOP and Frequency votes, which went into effect on January 21, 2011)."
