Tom Campbell Becomes President of the American Academy of Actuaries

Issued by American Academy of Actuaries

Nov. 5, 2020

WASHINGTON—Thomas A. Campbell of Farmington, Conn., began his term as president of the American Academy of Actuaries today, succeeding 2019–20 Academy President D. Joeff Williams to lead the national professional association of 19,500 members whose mission is to serve the public and the U.S. actuarial profession.

“For decades, Academy leaders and volunteers have provided invaluable input through their contributions to the actuarial public policy issues of their times,” Campbell said after accepting the presidential mantle from Williams during the Academy’s virtual 2020 Annual Meeting and Public Policy Forum. “With 2021 just ahead, I look forward to leading the Academy in building on its solid foundation for providing objective actuarial analysis as it looks to the meet the public policy challenges and emerging professionalism issues in the days to come. Those include the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic and its public health, financial, and economic consequences; new initiatives to examine racial inequities in insurance; and contributing to a greater understanding of climate risk and its financial security implications.”

Campbell has served on the Academy’s Board of Directors as both a regular director and as vice president, life; and has been the chairperson or a member of Life Practice Council and numerous professionalism committees and work groups. He is a senior actuarial consultant for Actuarial Resources Corporation, where his work focuses on the life insurance area.
