Wellbeats Rolls Out Inclusive Fitness Content Designed to Encourage Physical Activity and Creativity for Kids

Issued by Wellbeats

Nov. 3, 2021

The new classes will engage children from 3 to 10 years old in creative play to build strength, teach teamwork, and develop healthy habits for children of all ability levels

ST. LOUIS PARK, MN - Regular movement or activity improves kids' physical and mental health and may even boost their grades. However, 76% of American children do not get enough exercise, and children with disabilities often are even less active. To address this disparity, Wellbeats, the leading provider of on-demand, virtual wellness content for use in corporate wellbeing, has introduced a series of new virtual classes designed to help kids of all ability levels be more active.

"Keeping kids active improves cardio fitness, builds stronger bones and muscles, and boosts immune health, but it can be hard for parents to find appropriate activities, especially if their child has a disability," said Jeff Kenefick, Senior Vice President of Product, Wellbeats. "Our new kids' classes allow employers to engage their employees' families by making it easy for parents to support mental and physical growth with fun virtual activities. We have intentionally designed the classes so any child is able to participate at his or her own level."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that kids ages 3 to 5 participate in physical activity throughout the day and kids 6 to 17 participate in at least one hour a day of moderate to vigorous activity each day. The new Wellbeats classes offer activities that will make exercise feel like play time.

Each of the 23 new classes is built from the ground up to engage imagination; encourage movement, creativity, and discovery; and introduce mindfulness exercises to reduce anxiety. Classes have been designed around themes, such as numbers, carnivals, road trips, or action movies, and begin with kids gathering items from around the house to use in their activities to encourage them to think creatively.

For example, kids taking the Road Trip class might collect a chair to serve as their driver's seat and a paper plate to serve as a steering wheel. From there, age-appropriate play activities help kids build strength, aerobic fitness, and more. Content is grouped by age to help kids and parents find classes that are appropriate for their ability level. According to Kennefick, 20% of classes feature kids with disabilities participating in the activities.

"The experience of the past 18 months has made it clear that fully supporting employee wellness means offering options for the whole family," said Kennefick.  "Whether kids continue to learn remotely due to COVID concerns, or students have returned to school, Wellbeats delivers easy options for engaging children in healthy activities, something that can be especially challenging for parents of children with disabilities."

Kennefick added that by giving employees access to this inclusive collection of kids classes, employers can support the wellbeing of their employees' families, turn screen time into a positive activity, and strengthen the overall culture of health in the workplace.
