Kelsey Mayo’s dedication to education came full circle on Oct. 21 when she was announced as the 2024 recipient of the Thomas J. Finnegan III Educator of the Year Award at the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) Annual Conference.

Mayo, a mainstay at American Retirement Association (ARA) conferences across its sister organizations, helping members and guiding others to understand key legislative developments on Capitol Hill.

Upon accepting the award, Mayo expressed heartfelt gratitude.

“It’s a tremendous honor to receive the Educator of the Year award, especially one named after Tom Finnegan, a great friend and an exceptional leader in our field,” Mayo said. “Tom’s legacy of serving the industry with dedication and knowledge sets a high standard for all of us in education. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and will continue to carry forward his spirit of commitment and passion.”

Bob Kaplan, director of technical education at the American Retirement Association (ARA), emphasized Mayo’s significant impact on education within the organization and the retirement industry.

“Her passion for teaching and mentoring has made a lasting impact on countless professionals, setting a high standard for educational excellence,” Kaplan said. “She demonstrates the same leadership, dedication, and commitment to elevating others in the industry as Tom did.”

Shannon Edwards, ASPPA’s incoming president-elect for 2025, praised Mayo’s dedication.

“Kelsey is an amazing educator who has freely given her time to better our industry for years,” Edwards said. “She teaches with patience and kindness and truly embodies the qualities of Tom Finnegan, for whom this award is named.”

Amanda Iverson, current ASPPA president, also celebrated Mayo’s contributions to the organization and the industry.

“Mayo’s dedication to advancing retirement plan education is truly unparalleled,” Iverson said. “Her commitment to our industry, combined with her brilliance and unwavering support, makes her an indispensable leader and educator. As ASPPA president and as her friend, I couldn’t be prouder to see her recognized with the Thomas J. Finnegan III Educator of the Year Award. Her contributions continue to shape the future of our industry, and she remains a trusted advisor and advocate for so many.”

Mayo serves as the outside director of regulatory affairs for the ARA and is a partner at Poyner Spruill LLP.
