PSCA Unveils New Participant Education Campaign for 401(k) Day on September Fifth

Issued by PSCA [Plan Sponsor Council of America]

Sept. 4, 2025

Arlington, VA – Observed on Friday, September 5, 2025, National 401(k) Day™ is a chance for companies to engage employees in their retirement planning. Nearly 30 years ago, PSCA designated the Friday after Labor Day as 401(k) Day – as a nod to the notion that retirement follows work. Each year PSCA creates a free education campaign for plan sponsors to use with their employees to encourage them to save in their workplace retirement plan.

“Plan sponsors have limited time, and often limited resources, to provide educational materials to employees. PSCA is grateful to the volunteers on its Education and Communication committee for creating a comprehensive and fun program to encourage employees to save for retirement and take a few important steps to securing their financial future,” said Will Hansen, PSCA’s Executive Director.

This year’s campaign, "Step Up to Retirement," uses a running theme to highlight four key retirement savings concepts. The campaign is structured to be held throughout a month with four weekly themes: Boost Your Momentum, Balance Your Stride, Build Your Endurance, and Visualize the Finish Line. Each week includes a flyer and other promotional materials around a retirement plan theme (increasing deferrals, balancing your investments, automatic escalation, and retirement planning). There is also an option to hold a 4.01k (2.5 mile) run/walk event with customizable promotional materials provided.

Organizations can structure the campaign so that employees who complete all the steps of the challenge can earn a reward of some kind. Organizations are encouraged to customize their celebrations with extended activities, virtual summits, or on-demand content, making retirement planning accessible for all employees, whether onsite or remote.

Campaign materials can be accessed for free at: https://www.psca.org/401k-day-resources.
