Press Release 401(k) Day Marks 30 Years of Encouraging Americans to Save for Retirement |

National observance celebrates three decades of helping workers build financial security through workplace retirement plans Arlington, VA -- The Plan Sponsor Council of America (PSCA) celebrates the 30th anniversary of 401(k) Day, marking three decades of promoting retirement readiness and encouraging workers to take meaningful action toward a more secure financial future. This year 401(k) Day will be held on Thursday September 10th. Established in 1996, 401(k) Day has served as an annual reminder for workers to evaluate their retirement savings, increase contributions when possible, and take advantage of the opportunities offered through workplace retirement plans. Throughout the past 30 years, employer-sponsored defined contribution plans, particularly 401(k) plans, have become a cornerstone of retirement security for millions of Americans. "Thirty years ago, 401(k) Day was created with a simple but powerful mission: encourage workers to take positive steps toward saving for retirement," said Will Hansen, PSCA’s Executive Director. "Today, as we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we recognize both the tremendous progress that has been made and the continued importance of helping Americans save, invest, and plan for the future." System Evolution The retirement savings landscape has evolved dramatically since the first 401(k) Day. Innovations such as automatic enrollment, automatic escalation, qualified default investment alternatives, improved investment options, and expanded financial wellness programs have made saving easier and more accessible than ever before. Today, millions of workers begin saving automatically through their employer-sponsored plans, benefiting from a system designed to help them stay on track toward retirement. Yet challenges remain. Rising living costs, longer life expectancies, and financial uncertainty continue to underscore the need for consistent retirement saving throughout a worker's career. To support participant engagement, PSCA has created and distributed a free annual 401(k) Day educational campaign every year since the observance began, providing employers with turnkey resources they can use to educate and motivate employees about retirement saving. The campaigns have evolved alongside the retirement system itself, reflecting changing participant needs, plan design innovations, and emerging retirement readiness challenges. 2026 Campaign: Never Too Little, Never Too Late This year's campaign, "Never Too Little, Never Too Late," acknowledges the realities of today's increasingly automated retirement plan environment while reinforcing a timeless message: every action matters. Designed to reach both new savers and those who may feel behind in their retirement journey, the campaign encourages employees to recognize that small increases in savings can have a meaningful long-term impact, and that it's never too late to improve their retirement outlook. Through ready-to-use communications, graphics, and customizable materials, employers can help employees move beyond autopilot and make active decisions that strengthen their financial future. In addition to customizable resources, there is a three-part podcast series featuring members of PSCA's Education Committee covering the basics in 10-minute increments. "Automatic plan features have helped millions of Americans become retirement savers, but engagement remains critical," said Hansen. "This year’s campaign reminds participants that while automation is a powerful tool, their individual decisions still make a difference. Whether increasing a contribution rate, reviewing investments, or simply checking account balances, small actions can lead to meaningful results over time." As 401(k) Day enters its fourth decade, PSCA and retirement plan sponsors across the country remain committed to expanding access, improving participant outcomes, and helping more Americans achieve financial confidence in retirement. About 401(k) Day Founded by the Plan Sponsor Council of America in 1996, 401(k) Day is an annual retirement savings awareness event dedicated to promoting the importance of workplace retirement plans and encouraging Americans to take actions that strengthen their financial futures. Each year, PSCA develops a free educational campaign that employers can use to engage employees and promote retirement readiness.
