"Studies show that work/life programs can help improve employee engagement and productivity. But you may believe effective strategies are expensive and require a big-business budget. Not true. Some larger and midsize employers have created innovative, low-cost work/life practices that even small businesses can adopt."

"Newly covered employers would be entering a thicket of ERISA and tax rules the likes of which they never could have anticipated. In addition, this provision doesn't mention anything about employer matching contributions. Employers could, however, take a large bite out of regulatory compliance by buying off-the-shelf safe-harbor plans from vendors."

"The Philadelphia Catholic Archdiocese has frozen a defined-benefit pension plan for its 8,500 parochial school teachers and support staff. The move comes as the archdiocese wrestles with a $150 million pension deficit.... Without the weight of those accruing benefits, the archdiocese hopes to close the deficit over time by continuing to contribute 4.5% of each employee's paycheck."

"Almost all U.S. employers will give workers a day off next year on Christmas Day, Thanksgiving and New Year's Day ... [M]ost full-time employees (78%) will receive six to 10 paid holidays per year, while most part-time workers (51%) will receive up to five paid holidays per year."

"As employees continue to feel more confident about changing jobs, employers once again are turning to nontraditional and sometimes unique job perks to help them meet their hiring needs and retain star staff members. A new wrinkle with this recovery: These aren't across-the-board, extra benefits to which everyone is entitled. More companies are customizing perks to suit the specific employees they have targeted for retention. Some hold out special benefits as rewards for a job well done."

"Consider a Roth 401(k) plan for your company. As the name implies, this setup combines elements of 401(k) plans and Roth IRAs. Why are Roth 401(k)s back in the public eye? Uncle Sam just announced they're approved for millions of federal government workers. Private employers may be intrigued."

"Even if they've been diligently socking away money in their 401(k) plans, employees who are about to retire are no doubt nervous about their financial futures.... Believe it or not, the IRS wants to help. The [IRS recently] proposed guidance [that] seeks to allow employers to offer soon-to-be retirees a wider range of choices with regard to how they receive their 401(k) retirement benefits."

"You need to communicate differently with a 25-year-old than with a 62-year-old. The older worker doesn't need to hear about the benefits of a company match. If you're looking to change behavior, make it easier. For example, call a meeting to explain how to enroll, and then let employees check a box on a card so you can enroll them. Don't make them do it themselves later -- they may never do it."

"CFOs who understand the link between employee health and productivity are more likely to embrace a wellness initiative as a financial priority for the company, a new study reveals. In fact, in a survey of CFOs by the Integrated Benefits Institute ..., three-quarters said they believe providing health benefits is important for the company's financial strategy. Even so, most CFOs still regard employee health as less of a driver of productivity than other benefits like training, the survey shows."

There are federal, state and sometimes local laws that can affect wellness programs. Employers need to understand them. They also need to stay alert to changes in the laws and court interpretations that may make their chosen wellness initiatives more or less risky.

Syntax Enhancements for Standard Searches

  • Quotation marks can be used to require an exact phrase, such as
    "standard of review"
  • When CAPITALIZED, the words AND, OR and NOT are logic operators, which are especially powerful when multiple words (e.g., synonyms) are grouped in parentheses, such as
(vested OR vesting OR lifetime) AND (retiree OR retirement) AND (health OR healthcare) AND (benefits OR coverage)
