Rate of 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals Jumps

Excerpt: Amid a weakening economy and rising layoffs, the percentage of 401(k) plan participants who have made hardship withdrawals from their accounts jumped 21 percent during the first six months of 2008 compared with the same period last year, according to Mercer. During the same period of time, the number of new loans taken out by plan participants increased 4.5 percent.
