Guest lgt Posted September 17, 1998 Posted September 17, 1998 i recently retired and rolled my 401-k . it is all in mutual funds. i want to sell some stock and put some of my retirement $ with a venture capital group for some foriegn investment but not if this would be deemed a taxable event. can some help? thanks
LCARUSI Posted September 17, 1998 Posted September 17, 1998 I believe you are asking whether or not you can direct the investment of some or all of your IRA into a venture capital group. You should ask the trustee of your IRA. If the answer is no, maybe you can move the IRA to another organization which would permit such an investment.
Larry M Posted September 17, 1998 Posted September 17, 1998 A separate question you should ask yourself is whether this is the sort of investment you want to make with your retirement funds. Consider the effects of a. a steep decline in the value of the investment (and your potential loss of retirement income - with no offsetting tax deduction. b. a steep increase in the value (and whether you would be better off, in such a case, if it were taxed as a capital gain - outside the IRA - as opposed to ordinary income when distributed from the IRA.
