austin3515 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 We';re starting to go paperless and one tool I can see that I need is some sort of an on-screen ruler to scroll down through a pdf report. I have seen apps out there that do this but was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for one they have used. I'm leary of installing from some random website for security reasons. Mike Preston Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Why do you need an on-screen ruler? When you are viewing the pdf can't you just slide the scrollbar? Or use the keyboard keys (PgUp, PgDn, Left-Arrow, Right-Arrow)? Or if the reader has a GOTO page number capability, use that?
Doghouse Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 If you are using full Adobe Acrobat, you can click on View / Show/Hide / Rulers and Grids/ Rulers.
austin3515 Posted February 6, 2017 Author Posted February 6, 2017 What I'm looking for is an actual line that will go across the screen that I can move up and down the screen. We have landscape reports, where someone's name is on one side of the screen and their vesting years of service is on the other. A ruler on the screen (just like a ruler on paper) would make it easier to follow rows all the way across. The ruler feature in adobe doesn't go across the screen, and the grid-lines are not really lining up they way I want them to which would be too distracting. Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
BG5150 Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 Oddly enough I had the same issue this morning! The workaround: Tools --> Accessibility (I had to hit the little icon in the upper right to get additional menus. In accessibility, choose Measuring tool. Draw a line across the page and you can use the scroll wheel and the line will move up and down the page. I'm still trying to get the nuances of it. QKA, QPA, CPC, ERPATwo wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.
Belgarath Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 BG - what version are you using? I can't get to the "Measuring tool" you refer to. But then, I'm what would politely be referred to as "challenged" when it comes to anything with my computer...

In Acrobat (I use Acrobat Pro DC), turn on the rulers feature. Move your cursor to the ruler on your left hand side and double click on the ruler. This will produce a horizontal line on the screen that you can drag and move, sort of like an actual ruler on paper. It is a little limited as you have to actually click and drag the line rather than just scroll or arrow down but it is the best workaround I have found. Also, double clicking on the top ruler will produce a vertical line but I rarely have a use for that. I hope that helps. J
austin3515 Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 So far my best option has been drawing a red rectangle box and using up and down arrows to move it around. Only problem is that it moves relative slowly. The ruler was clever but I absolutely despise clicking because it bothers my finger. Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
RatherBeGolfing Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Ok I found something that may work! The measuring tool. Go to Tools --> Review and Approve --> Measure Click on the straight line measuring tool and click somewhere on the left side of the screen and then on the right side. You now have a red horizontal line that will move up and down with the mouse without clicking!
austin3515 Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 Oh that is very cool! I had actually seen that before could not get it to work the way you described. Thanks! Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
