On 10/18/17, I received my ERPA renewal letter from the IRS. It says it was issued on 10/1/17 and expires 9/30/20. To the left of that same page, it says, under CE Requirements: "Annual CE Cycle: January through December".

I know that the requirements are 72 hours with a min of 16 per year and 2 of ethics per year. What constitutes each of the three years?

Is it 1/1/17-12/31/17, 1/1/18-12/31/18 and 1/1/19-12/31/19?

Is it 1/1/18-12/31/18, 1/1/19-12/31/19 and 1/1/20-12/31/20?

Is it 10/1/17-9/30/18, 10/1/18-9/30/19 and 10/1/19-9/30/20?

I think it should be the first but it is very confusing. Any thoughts?

Should every ERPA get a renewal letter?  I do not recall ever getting one.

After you renew, you are supposed to get your renewal letter in the mail.  If you haven't gotten yours, contact the IRS and ask them about it.  I had to do that last cycle.  If you send them an email, they are required to respond. When I have emailed them, they have called me within a few days to discuss, and then follow up with an email response to see if everything has been resolved.

I recall at the first ERPA conference in Chicago in 2010, that we indeed did get an hour of credit for learning about how to get more CE.  The woman from the IRS (I think it was Deborah Lorning, but not sure) mentioned she's not sure she would have approved such a class after the fact.

I am going to bring this back for a discussion. I last renewed on 4/1/20 and my notes say that was to cover 1/1/20-12/31/22. I had a calendar reminder pop on for Saturday 4/1/23 reminding me to renew for the 1/1/23-12/31/25 cycle. Now I am not so sure. My SS# ends with a 5. According to Form 8554 (Rev. 11-2022) (irs.gov), my next renewal is 4/1/24. Something doesn't make sense here. Does anyone know if the cycles chages? Was there a grace period because of COVID or something? The form clearly says I shouldn't renew for an extra year but I am almost 100% positive my last cycle was 2020-2022.

Anyone have any ideas? Thx.

Are you sure that's what it says? I'm a "6" so I'm in the same enrollment cycle, and my ERPA card says it expires September 30, 2023, (it was issued in 2020) so I'm renewing now, using 2020, 2021, and 2022 credits. I'm looking at the same 8554 you are, and I don't see where it says that my next renewal is 4/1/24.

I've always maintained that passing the tests is easier than figuring out these mentally arthritic renewal cycles...

Isn't that the original definition of the cycle, so keep adding multiples of 3 years to it?  My SSN ends in a 2, so my enrollment cycles have begun each of April 1 of 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022.  And so when I re-upped in spring 2022 last year I entered in my CE amounts from 2019, 2020, 2021.

That's the same one I was looking at. It says April 1, 2014, not 2024.

I am a complete IDIOT!!! I have no idea what I was thinking. I looked at it yesterday and again today and didn't catch that I was reading 2014 as 2024. Must have been a mind trick. Wow, I need a vacation :). Thank you so much for bringing this up. You could have been a lot more brutal in your reply :). I will renew now.

Your real mistake was assuming that an IRS form with a 11-2022 revision date would actually have updated dates in the form rather than dates from a decade ago. :)

Don't be so hard on yourself! We're all (or at least I am) getting pretty frazzled about now, and when adding 2 + 2 the sum is coming up as a bushel of potatoes, or something similar.

P.S. last time I renewed in May. When I never got my renewal in the mail, I contacted them. They were very nice, said they would send out a dupIicate. They sent out the duplicate just before Thanksgiving. But they were very nice, so no big deal.

Just for an update. After my post above I called and was told it was approved and mailed. Never got it.

Waited another 30+ days and called near the end of June. I was told it was approved and a new copy mailed. Never got it.

Finally called on Monday (9/11). Just happened to speak with the same IRS rep that I spoke with in May. He actually was a little perturbed that I didn't get it yet and promised me I would get this one.

Good news, I got the new enrollment card yesterday. It was mailed 9/11.

Felt a little like Steve Martin when the new phone book arrived.
