Excerpt: The Department of Labor has issued guidance on the treatment of stock received by a welfare benefit plan (or by an employer on behalf of the plan) in the demutualization of an insurance company. In an unnumbered letter dated February 15, 2001, the DOL provided practical solutions to the problems faced by welfare benefit plans receiving stock under a demutualization.
