Excerpt: Hewlett Packard Co. is phasing out its defined benefit pension plan, as the exodus of big employers from the plans continues. Except for long-serving employees close to retirement, Hewlett Packard will stop accruals in its $3.2 billion plan effective Jan. 1, 2006.
