Excerpt: Many attorneys don't understand the importance of survivor benefits and their impact on the amount of pension that will actually be paid in the future. A non-participant spouse can receive as little as 50% of what he or she thought they had bargained for if the survivorship issue is not dealt with properly. Attorneys are not expected to, and usually do not, understand actuarial calculations.
