Excerpt: [N]umerous reports suggest that boomers or subsets of boomers ... have accumulated an average (mean) of about $50,000 in their retirement accounts (DeVaney and Chiremba, 2005) or less (Goodman and Orszag, 2005). Medians -- the value at which half the population falls above and half below -- are generally used rather than means to characterize wealth distributions because wealth is so skewed toward the top.
