Excerpt: Coffin v. Bowater Inc. provides guidance on the steps necessary to effectively end responsibility for employee welfare benefit plan obligations. The plan administrator resorted to several arguments to support its position that the sale of a subsidiary terminated responsibility for its welfare plans. Neither the district court nor the First Circuit Court of Appeals found these arguments compelling.
