ERISA Watch Tells the Stories Behind This Federal Employment Law

Kantor & Kantor is pleased to announce the launch of ERISA Watch, a monthly podcast. The show, hosted by partner Elizabeth Hopkins, will illustrate that behind the cases she and others have been a part of, there are individuals, families, caregivers, and loved ones that can be deeply affected by the decisions of plan administrators, insurance companies and courts.

“I decided to start this podcast because most people have never heard of ERISA, even though it may have a significant impact on their lives,” said Elizabeth Hopkins. “ERISA is the statute that governs employment-related healthcare, disability, life insurance and pension plans. And even though judges and lawyers have heard of ERISA, they tend to think of ERISA cases as dull and technical.  To the contrary, these cases raise some of the most important issues of our day. And at the heart of all these cases are stories about real people who hope to be treated fairly at critical junctures in their lives.” 

The episodes will cover stories such as:

• How the healthcare system functions (or fails to function)
• Can we count on an income if we become disabled?
• How we treat (or fail to treat) those suffering from mental illnesses and addiction
• Whether we can retire in security
• And more

ERISA Watch, launching March 5, 2021, will air monthly and will be available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pandora, and other leading podcast networks.

About the Host

Elizabeth Hopkins is a partner at Kantor & Kantor. After a long and fulfilling career at the United States Department of Labor, where she gained substantial experience working on pension, healthcare, and other ERISA issues, she joined the firm in 2018. Elizabeth represents clients who have been denied a pension, healthcare, disability, and life insurance benefits. She has practiced in the ERISA field since 1989 and is a passionate, knowledgeable, and creative advocate for those who have been denied the employee benefits to which they are entitled. Elizabeth is also a life-long volunteer for a wide range of organizations, from the Special Olympics to a homeless shelter, to the Red Cross, to an after-school program at a Los Angeles public high school. More recently, she traveled to Dilley, Texas to represent detained migrant women and their children claiming asylum.
