30Rock Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 A number of new hires do not have an assigned social security number due to social security offices in the area being closed. What is the normal method to set up a retirement account in a qualified 401k plan for these employees? I assume they are resident aliens. What is the recommended procedure for a recordkeeper and payroll department? Thanks!
Bob the Swimmer Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Be careful---we had a couple of large plans near our southern border (Texas) where SSNs were sold to immigrants who tried to use them to participate in qualified plans. Was an oddity but you never know.
BG5150 Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 I would call the SSA and ask them how an alien can obtain a TIN for work purposes now that the offices are closed. QKA, QPA, CPC, ERPATwo wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.
